Driving back from Cleveland recently, my companion stared
relentlessly out of the window absolutely mesmerized by the setting sun. She
explained, with childlike candor, that she was afraid to look away, even for a
second, because she might miss that final moment, the magnificence of days end.
Our quest then became to stop and observe this daily miracle. We got hopelessly
lost chasing the waning sun but, in the process, we discovered
I was so thankful to have her with me. She graciously diverted my attention away from the rigors of the road, and directed my focus towards the pleasures and treasures of life.
Unity, and Rev. Kathleen’s message in particular, has that same effect. Taking me out of my earthly busyness, and depositing me in the magnificence that can only be God made.
I don’t know about you, but I need these messengers of spirit. I need to be reminded of who He/She is and who I truly am. Mathew J.T. Stepanek, a spiritual intuitive who died at the age of 12 from a rare genetic disease, profoundly expressed the meaning of being Thankful in a letter to God.
“Dear God,
I was going to thank you tonight
For a beautiful sunrise,
That was pink behind the fog down the hill,
And for a wonderful rainbow
That I ran under pointing to all my favorite colors,
And for such a great sunset,
That sparked orange across the water.
I was going to thank you tonight for all these special gifts,
Except that none of them happened.
But do you know what?
I still love you, God,
And I have lots of other things
That I can thank you for tonight,
Even if you didn’t give those very special gifts to me today.
It’s okay, God,
Because I’ll look for them all again,
When my tomorrow comes.”
Having celebrated Thanksgiving, and honored all that is good in our life, let us not forget
that between the bejeweled bookends of every day, sunrise and sunset, there lies much to be Thankful for. In Unity Thanksgiving is not confined to one joyous day in November, but is a daily observance of how God is so magnificently revealed in our lives.
The Board wishes you a happy Thanksgiving. Everyday.
Namaste,
Barry Rowland.
