The Art of Compassionate Listening
Taught by Susan Wilk, High Watch Director
This class is for those who wish to make a difference
in their relationships. The class will teach you the blocks to really
communicating with another and to be totally present to listen to another. You
will be able to use the communication skills of attending, clarifying,
acknowledging, summarizing, and empathizing with the speaker. Praying with and
for another is very powerful and builds a bond between the participants. You
will also be learning to pray with another.
This class is required for those who wish to
become a High Watch Volunteer and is a core course in the Spiritual Leadership
Education Program.
Dates: four Sundays from 1-5, Feb. 3,
10, 17 & 24
Cost: $60.00 (retakes of the class on a love
offering basis)

ASH WEDNESDAY

SPECIAL MEDITATION SERVICE
Ash
Wednesday comes 46 days before Easter and is the
beginning of Lent. The symbolism of the
ashes comes from an ancient Easter tradition of throwing ashes over your head
or on you as a sign of repentance. (Job 42:3-6 "Job said to God, 'I have
heard your voice, but now I see you with my eyes. I abhor myself and
repent in dust and ashes.")
We repent
or turn away from sin. The word sin means "missing the mark" or
making a mistake. In Unity, we are taught to turn away from or repent from
negative beliefs and statements about ourselves and others because the truth
is: we are made in the image of God. We have made the mistake of thinking
we are less then that, but Spirit lives within us--Luke 17:21 "..behold
the kingdom of God is within you." and I Corinthians 3:16 "Know you
not that you are the temple of the God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in
you?"
For this
Lenten Season we are asking you to turn away from, to repent from negative
beliefs and statements about yourself or others AND TURN TOWARD THE TRUTH.
The truth is, we are expressions of the Divine. Within us is that Divine Spirit
that is whole and perfect. We can turn from the ego that thrives on separation
and drama and turn toward our true identity, that of a spiritual being having a
human experience. Let me give you an example. Growing up and much of my adult
life, I believed I was not good enough. I now know that that belief was a lie.
Through the compassion I feel, God works through me.
As we go
into meditation, allow Spirit to show you what negative ideas you are to
turn away from. Allow God to show you what is beautiful and wonderful within
you and within your life. At any time during the meditation, you may write down
those blessings that are you and that are in your life.

This class
will teach you how to begin to change your negative thoughts and statements
into positive affirmations. Then you will learn to go the next level by
changing the affirmations into “journey statements.” The journey statement is a
statement of how you choose to live in a positive way and the positive outcome
you wish to create. You will also learn to use affirmative prayer for yourself
and others.

Come and explore how to open more fully
to the Divine within you and within the universe through the use of prayer.
